What Is Dental SEO, and How Does It Work With AI Search?

Dental SEO is the work that gets your practice found when someone looks for a dentist: on Google, in Google Maps and, more and more, inside the answers AI engines like ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity give. When practice owners ask us about it, they usually want two answers: what the work includes, and whether AI search changed the rules. This post covers both, the way we explain them to dentists at Digital Floss.

What is SEO in dentistry?

SEO in dentistry, short for search engine optimization, means shaping your website and your online presence so search engines understand what you do, where you do it and why a patient should trust you. When that work is done well, your practice shows up when someone nearby searches for the care you offer.

For a dental practice, the work falls into three parts:

  • Your website: a page for every service you offer, written in plain language, fast on a phone and easy to book from.
  • Your facts: one name, address, phone number and set of hours, matched everywhere your practice appears online.
  • Your proof: reviews, real photos of your team and content that shows a patient who you are before they call.

If you want the fundamentals straight from the source, Google's own SEO Starter Guide is a good plain-language primer.

Does AI search change how dental SEO works?

Yes. The foundation stays the same, and the finish line moved. Patients don't scroll ten blue links anymore. They ask ChatGPT, often by voice, and it answers with one, two or three practices. Everyone else is invisible.

Google's guidance on AI features and your website says there are no extra requirements to appear in AI Overviews beyond standard SEO best practices. Good SEO is your entry ticket. What AI search adds is a higher bar for clarity. An AI engine pulls a direct answer from a page and repeats it, so a page that answers a patient's question in its first sentence gives the engine a line to quote.

Dr. Annalisa Smith, one of our clients, put it this way in her testimonial: "Chat listed our practice as number two in my own search because we had pediatric information and airway information." Specific, clearly organized content on the topics your patients ask about is what earns a practice a place in that answer.

What does a dental website need to rank on Google and get named by AI?

A dental website needs clear answers, consistent facts and structure machines can read. In the Signature Story Sites we build, that comes down to five pieces:

  1. Answers to the questions patients ask. Each site launches with eight or more Patient Guides aimed at the gaps our AI test finds. Each guide leads with a direct answer and includes five FAQs.
  2. One set of facts. One public phone number, one address and one set of hours, matched across your site, your schema and your directories. When AI stops seeing conflicting facts, it stops hedging about you.
  3. Schema built for answer engines. Your practice and doctor are declared as clear entities with confirmed credentials only, and every service page carries Service and FAQ markup. Schema.org's Dentist type is the shared vocabulary search engines use to describe a dental practice.
  4. Your own photos and your own words. Every photo is your team, your office and your patients, shot by our crew and named for image search. The copy comes from your shoot-day interviews, in your exact voice.
  5. Rankings you keep. When we rebuild a site, every old URL is mapped to its new page before launch, so the equity you've built carries over.

How do you know if your dental SEO is working?

Your dental SEO is working when more new patients find you through search, and when your practice shows up in the searches and AI answers that matter in your market. Rankings and traffic are useful signals. New patients in the chair are the number that counts.

Start by measuring where you stand. Every Signature Story Site build begins with a 10-question AI test run through ChatGPT, Perplexity and Claude, using your real services and city. We record who gets named, which competitors show up and every wrong fact AI repeats about you, then trace each one to its source. We re-run the test at 30 days, then monthly.

You can run a quick version yourself tonight. Ask ChatGPT or Gemini the question a new patient in your area would ask, like Which dentist in my town does dental implants? , and note which practices come back.

Google results move too. Dr. Kristi Coulombe said in her testimonial: "I Google searched us the other day Incognito and I think we came up third where we used to be like on the 12th page." Results vary by market, and we never promise a ranking no one controls.

How does Digital Floss approach SEO for dentists?

At Digital Floss, we treat SEO and AI visibility as one system with your website at the center. We read your market every month, check what the AI engines say about you and publish the content that puts your name in the answer. After launch, each Signature Story Site gets four new Patient Guides a month, aimed at whatever your competitors are winning.

The content comes from your story. Our crew spends two shoot days at your practice, twice a year, and your website copy is written from those transcripts. If you say no to prices, a claim or a topic, it never appears. No SEO upside overrides your no.

Our founder, Dr. Anissa Broussard, DMD, practiced for two decades before starting Digital Floss, and she wrote FOUND, the book on how AI chooses which practices to recommend. You can read more about how we handle SEO for dentists, from your website to AI search.

Want to see where your practice stands today? Book a strategy call with our team. We'll ask ChatGPT, Gemini and Google who they recommend near you, live, and show you whether your practice comes up. The call is free, and if we're not the right fit, we'll tell you.
